-чный emphasizes the impression it leaves, and -ческий refers to its date.
So архаический период in Greek history can't be called "архаичный" - it is a term.
In "this word sounds archaic" you are much more likely to use the other word (though you are at your right to use the longer word too, for fun, without change in the meaning).
