"a great many" and" a great number" what's the difference?

There's really no difference in meaning. The only grammatical difference is that you would add "of" after "a great number". For example, you would say: "A great many oranges" or "A great number of oranges".

I'd tend to agree. I can't think of any examples where you can't use either one of these interchangeably. Do you have an example of where this is causing you confusion?
