The teddy bear got its name from an American cartoon in 1902 showing President Theodore , whose nickname was Teddy.(Teddy) Roosevelt refusing to shoot a cute bear cub tied to a tree.

Er, because his name was Edward? EDIT: FYI "Teddy" is a diminutive of the name "Edward". EDIT number 2: I have been given -5, so I must be wrong because I am only a native speaker of English who lives in Britain, which is the place of origin of the name Edward.
