When do you use "ser" versus "estar" and "encontrarse"? Se encuentra is another way to say "is" just like ser and estar..how do you differentiate which word to use in which context?

In Spain: "Ser" is used for permanent characterisitics. By example, "es médico, es rico, es miope" "Estar" is used for temporary characterisitics, By example: "está cansado, está despierto, está preocupado" "Encontrarse" is similar to "estar", but is less used than "estar". "Encontrarse" is used principally for matters of health. By example: "me encuentro bien" is more polite than "estoy bien" (I am fine) "Me encuentro cansado" is more polite than "estoy cansado".(I am tired) "Encontrarse en" is more polite than "estoy en" "Me encuentro en Europa" (used by journalists of TV and radio) is more polite than "estoy en Europa" (I am in Europe)

'SE' is a Spanish pronoun. See this link. You'll understand reading some examples. http://spanish.about.com/od/pronouns/a/introduction_se.htm Let's See... If you have read the examples, you'll notice the last paragraph where it says ' A final note'. Also when explains 'Se' could be a part of the passive voice. While learning English I have learnt languages are different for translation, and sometimes there are parts on them that don''t exist or have another ways of saying, that's why they are different so, There are no exact ways of words and tenses translations. Like if I translate that sentence you mentioned exaclty the words mean, it will be 'mi abuelo está haciendo mejor'. There are ways of saying and phrases and slangs for each languages, and Grammar is quite difficult in every one. That's my explanation. And, your way of translation is ok. :)

Ser means to be something. Example, yo soy(un) escritor=I'm a writer Soy doctor=I'm a doctor soy alto=I'm tall. etc. Estar means to be in a place, to be doing something or something related wiht your state of mind or feelings example.Estoy en México = I am in México , Estoy escribiendo=I'm writing ,Estoy enfermo=I'm sick. Note. some things you can say with both like Estoy alto and Soy alto both means I'm Tall.but remember Soy is something that I'am and Estoy is something that I feel temporary.Encontrarse means I find myself...... example. Me encuentro enfermo= I find myself sick.In spanish it is used to say what are you doing right now. Me encuentro en el trabajo= I am at work right now. Me encuentro trabajando=I'am working right now. Me encuentro estudiando=I'm studying right now.It is a way to tell others where to find you or how to find you. Me encuentro en México= I am in México.Me encuentro despierto= I'am awake
