A couple of questions about the forearm jerk 1. As far as I know, the forearm jerk means '*uck you'. Right? Does it vary depending on the persons(for example, does it mean something else if a man does it to a woman? 2. Whatever it exactly means, I wonder if it's something an English teacher could do in class, like a joke?

Offhand, I don't see how it's possible for any decent teacher to show off such an obscene performance. Consider! First of all, it is a gesture which would be understood by everyone as a vulgar and obscene sign and performed in the fashion when your obvious intention is to insult someone. Here's a description of that gesture-- right forearm goes up with a clenched fist while your left palm slaps on its biceps and remains there for a while. You can imagine what actually such a picture represents. Analogous for that gesture is "The finger" or "The bird" gesture.Their meanings,as soon as you already described are known . So such kind of teacher is liable to get into trouble.;) No joke.

Any gestures like this would be offensive, guys have been known to get into serious fights as they consider they have been insulted. As a teacher, I would never use any gesture like this, not even as a joke, as it is totally unprofessional.

Okay, I don't spend time in my life making swear gestures, but I think I know what this is...it's when you put your left (or right) hand in the crux (crux?) of the other arm's elbow and then throw a fist up into the air (bending the free arm). Generally done in the direction of the person you intend to receive the insult which means "F-you" or something to the equivalent. Why any teacher would do this in a classroom is beyond me (I don't know). If a teacher did this for any reason in an American classroom it would be entirely unprofessional and would probably be reported (by those offended) and that teacher might face suspension or firing, depending on where in the country the school is located. Why do you ask Hailey?
