I've heard "excusez-moi" in contexts where, in English, I'd say "sorry" - for instance, when my French-native students are late to the class I teach, they always feel like saying "excusez-moi" for being late, whereas in English I feel you'd mostly say "sorry."
Similarly for "pardon" - I was in a room and my friend accidentally turned off the light not knowing I was there; she said "pardon!" However, when I was talking to said friend another time, and her laptop started making noise in the middle of my sentence, she said "excuse-moi." Maybe they're interchangeable??!
