Walking in Wind
Why Italians not willing to speak English? I have a freind who will visit Italy. But another friend told him few Italians would like to speak with visitors in English. He feel so depressed. I'd like to know thereason why Italians wouldn't speak English. Is it becasue they are not be able to speak English or they wouldn't like to speak with a stranger in English?

That has something to do with the fact that they are Italians, and not Englishmen or Americans. They already have a language called Italian, and it functions very well for them, especially in Italy. So you see, they have no reason to speak English at all.

I know many Italians and they do speak English. In Italy itself not too many know English. Get a dictionary and enjoy the best food in the world!

Did it imply that the Italians wanted the stranger to learn Italian or they just didn't wanna communicate with the stranger? So they play to know nothing about English. I can't believe that there's anybody doesn't know how to say "hello " or "byebye" in this world.

haha...I did notice that too.Good question. Even here, on italki, there aren't many of them learning English. I thought such a tendency is due their's good condition of life.Considering the fact that in my city the major foreign capital was invested from Italy, I did come to that kind of conclusion. Namely, they are independent economically, so no need to learn any foreign language.- Simple.LOL.Have been always amazed by Italians. Love them.

Actually quite a number of young Italians do speak some English, but unfortunately the education system doesn't give enough importance to English and many English teachers in the state education system don't speak very good English themselves! I live in Italy and have done a number of courses for teachers who are already teaching! Also until only a few years ago French was also taught as a second language and many adult Italians studied French instead of English. But Italians love to talk and are very friendly and when they can't find the words they use their hands!!
