Anna
I have a doubt about how I can use “ to wonder” or “to ask”. What is the difference between these? Many thanks😊

Hey Anna! Great question. Let me add something to the great comments of others. "I wonder if it will rain." = I'm in doubt about this; will it rain? I don't know. We don't know. Maybe you know, but I'm just thinking out loud, I'm not asking you. This isn't a question, it's a statement. However, if we're talking about the actions of others, particularly the person we are speaking to, we might use "wonder" as an indirect way of asking a question, like this: "Hey Jack, I wonder if you would help me paint my apartment on Sunday. I'll give you some pizza." This is quite casual, but common enough, and polite. Notice that the person is saying they're just thinking about it: they're curious about it. Anna, you were wondering about "wonder" and "ask." I hope our explanations have helped! We're all probably wondering if we helped or not—could you let us know?

Hello Anna, my name is John. Nice to meet you. 'To ask' is to inquire about something. It is strictly a question. 'To wonder' is to be curious to know something about a person, place, or thing. Wondering leads to asking questions. They are both linked. One leads to the other. Hope this helps. If you have any question please feel free to ask.

"To wonder" means "to ask yourself". "I wonder if it will rain today" = "I ask myself if it will rain today". Unlike "to ask", "to wonder" does not take a direct object. You can ask someone something, but you cannot wonder someone something. Wondering takes place inside of your own mind.

To wonder is literally having a doubt and not waiting for somebody else (aside from yourself) to eliminate the doubt. “ I wonder if it’s going to get hot today”. That means you “ask” yourself to guess / discover the answer. If you say out loud “I wonder (something)” and there is a person with you, that person might reply “yeah, right?” When you use the expression “ I ask” that means you will expect somebody to respond.

To wonder about something can mean to ask oneself [yourself] about it : ‘I wonder what he’s doing now’ ‘I wonder what the weather will be like tomorrow’ ‘I wonder if I can get away with it’ The other meaning of ‘wonder’, usually used as a noun, is to be in awe, to be impressed by something : ‘When they reached the top they gazed in wonder at the view’ The adjective ‘wonderful’ is derived from this meaning. Finally, it can imply surprise, something unexpected : ‘It’s a wonder she doesn’t fall over wearing those heels’. This is related to the idea of being impressed, as above.
