It describes people who draw energy from their inner world and not from being around other people. There is a misconception that introverts don't like people or lack social skills, or are shy. I think they are better understood as people who need time away from others to recharge and be their best in company.

Usman, if you use the word ¨introvert¨ be aware that there is a great diversity of how this term is used, even among native speakers. Isamooo and Voicee gave you definitions that are very similar to how many Americans who have not studied psychology use the term in everyday speech. Many native speakers who do not understand the different way the term is used by social scientists do believe introverts are just quiet, shy, or anti-social, as opposed to extroverts who are seen as friendly, ¨people people.

Shayan and Guyumar gave you a definition that more closely corresponds with how social scientists used the term.

A good book on the subject is Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can´t Stop Talking.¨ From the perspective of scientists studying temperament and personality, it has more to do with the optimal level of stimulation of the nervous system and how the person manages stimulation and energy. In the book, the author describes a scientist who can predict introversion/extroversion in infants as young as four months old. An introverted infant reacts more strongly to stimulation and therefore the optimal level of stimulation is less. Interactions with people are very stimulating. Introverts may be very friendly, warm, socially oriented individuals, but they will usually tend to need to have some time either alone or with people they know well who do not require a lot of interaction so they can re-energize.

If I recall correctly, the book says that about 80% of people (at least in the U.S.) are extroverts and our Western social organizations tend to be lead and organized by extroverts for extroverts. Some Eastern cultures are not as dominated by extroverts according to the book. My bet is that here on italki the percentage of introverts who write in the forum is higher. Introverts often tend to express themselves more easily in groups in writing.

introversion is a personality trait characterized by a focus on internal feelings rather than on external sources of stimulation.it doesn't necessarily mean that an introvert person is someone alone or someone who fears people or an antisocial person . You might even be surprised to learn that many people who you think of as "social butterflies" might actually be quite introverted.
