Don't try to deny it! We all know that English can be EXTREMELY annoying! Articles, phrasal verbs, prepositions... the list goes on. Now I know that language brings people together in a way that makes this world beautiful, but why does it have to be so WEIRD sometimes!?
What aspects of English annoy you the most?
I'm a native speaker too, and it's not just one aspect of the language that annoys me, but something more general: inconsistencies. For example:
- "My dad lets me play in the park alone."
- "My dad allows me to play in the park alone."
Why do we use the simple present "play" with the verb "let," but we have to change to the infinitive "to play" with the verb "allow"? Don't they mean the same thing?
Also, to follow up on Michael's response, homophones may be annoying, but when reading, nothing is more frustrating than homographs. Take this sentence:
- "He is set to present the present to the president at present."
How many different pronunciations are there for "present"? Two. How many different meanings? Three (the verb "pree-ZEHNT," the noun "PREH-zuhnt," and the time period "PREH-zuhnt"). How is the "untrained" eye supposed to be able to catch all these differences after reading such a sentence only once?
