Traditional vs. Simplified Characters 大家好!

I notice on italki most Chinese is written in traditional characters. Alas, I am being taught in simplified characters. However, my Chinese teacher is from Taiwan, and she will be willing to give me extra lessons in traditional character writing and recognition.

Should I take her offer? It will be very expensive but it seems to be necessary to communicate with most people on here.

I actually reckon that most people on here use simplified characters. Most learners of Chinese use simplified characters, as most people will spend most of their time interacting with people from mainland China, so it's good to have a good grasp of that system. To be perfectly honest, to get the most out of Chinese, you should have a good grasp of both systems, that way you'll be able to read more and be able to communicate with more people. I don't think you really need lessons to learn characters, all you need is a website that shoes you a characters in both systems, a pen and paper and some willpower.

I think it depends on who exactly are you trying to communicate with. Most native speakers I know (myself included) can read both Simplified and Traditional Chinese characters, even if we favour one over the other. If you're trying to communicate with language learners who are using the Traditional Chinese characters, then... maybe? But even then I would recommend getting your Mandarin Chinese to an upper intermediate/ advanced level before doing so. You might end up getting the characters mixed up otherwise.

you could just buy any dictionary for Chinese native speaker like 現代漢語詞典, then go through it since both simplified and traditional characters would be juxtaposed there for reference.

If you learn traditional Chinese characters , you will be able to read simplified Chinese characters, not the other way around. But you do not need to take a lesson for that . I know both of them very well. If you really wanted to learn tradition Chinese characters. Just learn the simplified Chinese characters and then use google translator to translate the words from S. to Tr. Chinese characters.  It's not necessarily to spend money for that.

I suggest  you to  learn simplified Chinese character, there are two reasons :first it is easy for you ,second it's very difficult for you to learn Traditional characters
