Noun + Preposition
Hi. Currently, I am learning about noun + preposition.
I am wondering if the construction of NOUN + PREPOSITION applies to all noun?
From what I read on the internet, mostly the construction of NOUN + PREPOSITION uses abstract noun.
for example :
Devotion + to (*devotion = abstract noun)
The girl's devotion to her job is amazing.

but I found this example in my grammar book: photo + of (*photo = concrete noun)
I have the a photo of you.

Then, is it possible if I use >>> a novel + for ???
I read a novel for an idea ?

Is the construction of NOUN + PREPOSITION only apply to abstract noun?
Could someone explain it to me?

Hello Arni,

As far as I know, there is no clear rule that tells you which type of nouns will pair up with which type of prepositions. I would not say that noun+preposition applies to all nouns, because it really depends on the context which you are using it in.

But what you wrote about concrete and abstract nouns is somewhat true. You would use prepositions mostly with abstract nouns (<em style="background-color: transparent;">e.g. I have knowledge of this issue. His reaction to the situation was very unexpected. You should have sympathy for him.</em>), because they tend to be sort of meaningless without anything related to them.

But there are also cases where you will use prepositions with concrete nouns as well to express a relationship between two things (<em style="background-color: transparent;">e.g. I took a photo of you. He wrote a novel for children. We need a gallon of milk.</em>), but these depend more on the verb itself, not on the noun (<em style="background-color: transparent;">e.g. I took a photo of you VS. I </em><em>gave </em><em style="background-color: transparent;">that photo </em><em>to </em><em style="background-color: transparent;">him.</em>).

So at the end of the day the key is context: you could use any nouns with a specific preposition, if it is required according to your sentence. Though, in case of abstract nouns, you will have to pay special attention on choosing the correct preposition that can be used.

I hope you got the answer to all your questions, but if not, do not hesitate to add a new comment. 😊

Your may be studying a more specific construction ("devotion to her job," "attention to detail"), but prepositions are often used with concrete nouns: a loaf of bread, the house across the street, a present for Emily, a novel for young adults, a book about Indonesia...
