I'm looking for a good Arabic learning book (for rookies)

Merhaban! I just started to learn Arabic, by listening to it (www.goethe-verlag.com/book2/), and I want to stick on that, but nevertheless I also want to delve further into it by reading (I think those two learning ways, besides writing, should be combined). Since I couldn't found an easy book in my central library and I noticed how much faster learning is with Chinese learning books (contrary to the internet), I'd like to ask you: Do you have some good recommendations up your sleeves?

It should contain:

– Basic phrases for communications

Deconstruction of phrases (so that you don't just learn them by heart, but understand how the language works)

– advices for pronunciation (like phonetic script or audio CD)

… the most important part is that the book teaches well how to understand the language functioning, because I've made much bad experience with »learning« books from the library…

What I mean with deconstruction: If you translate a phrase verbatim and even seperate it into its very essential structures (syllables etc.) you might find regularities that help you to understand the language. And I also think that this is especially important for Arabic, because it is such a logical language (like Chinese, in my opinion).

Whether it's in German, English, French, Spanish, Swedish, Danish or Dutch is not important to me.

Thanks if you've read it up to here! :)

Hallo Jan,

Ich suche auch ein gutes Arabisches Buch. Well, since you and I are interested in MSA, I will recommend you these books:

If you like to start with MSA there are 2 paths that I would recommend.
Either a slower, and more "fun" way with Mastering Arabic series, or a more resultdriven and
way more serious path with Schulz Standard Arabic - a beginner Intermediate course.

The two Mastering Arabic books will take you to perhaps low B1 and the Schulz book to
a low B2 and both are intended for selfstudy, as long as you work hard with them. However, notice that I am not fond of them. I think Praktisches Lehrbuch Arabisch might be a complement, but I don't recommend using it without a tutor.

Good luck in your studies!

"Modern Literary Arabic" by David Cowan is an excellent grammar resource that is readily available. I absolutely love it. You need to use this resource in conjunction with a phrase book which has audio tapes.

As Lauren mentioned before, "Al-Kitaab" is good although I don't have it..

There is a good book with audio, it is name "GateWay to Arabic" I have 1,2+3 parts..

And "Easy Arabic Grammar" is good for grammar too

Best wishes
