They could have more helpful. 21. I tried to phone you last week. We had a party and I wanted to invite you. That was nice of you, but I couldn't have gone anyway, I was away all last week.

Exercise with 'could (do) and could have (done)

1. What shall we have for dinner tonight? We could have fish. 

2. When shall I phone Angela? You could phone now. 
3. What shall I gave Ann for her birthday? You could gave [always present tense after, "can/could", "may/might", "must"] give her a book. or "You could have given her a book".
4. Where shall we hang this picture? We could hang the picture in the kitchen. or "we could have hung the picture in the kitchen".


In a question and answer scenario, it is preferable to use present tense or past participle for the immediate answer, "We can have fish", "You can phone now", "You can give her a book"
