'Thank you' in cantonese So I'm confused about two ways of saying 'thank you' in cantonese. First, m goi, is used for service and second, do jeh, is used fo thanking somebody for gift. I was wondering, which one use when somebody wishes you happy birthday?

多谢 do ze :thank you. 唔该 ng goi :唔=not,该=should (Literal meaning:should not trouble/ bother you) 1.excuse me 2.for thanks, usually in asking for help or after you get help from sb, e.g. 唔该帮我拿本书,after sb. done, say 唔该 for thanks is OK also. 3.for thanks, for polite, in the petty things of the life, informal usage, e.g. when you buy something from the shop... say 多谢 do ze for thanking gifts

do1 je6. You are absolutely correct "do jeh" is for thanking somebody for gift. It is also for compliment :) Wish you a Happy Year of the Dragon, and a reply to this would also be do1 je6 :)

1.唔該 "m goi" ---> use it when someone just do you a favor 2.多謝 "do jeh" ---> use it after someone give you a present or something for free (e.g. we would say "do jeh" after we've received a red pocket during New Year.) Hope it helps=)
