"Between" tells us about a specific relationship. If you are talking about the position of something, for example. The table is between the door and the window -- the table is located in the center, the door on one side, the window on the other side. You can also choose between many options. The emphasis is on making a specific choice, taking one and setting it apart from the many. "Among" tells us that something is part of a group. Again, if we talk about the location of something, "among" means it is somewhere inside the group. The key is among the junk in the drawer. In this case, we will have to look through the junk to find the key. If we are talking about choosing something, we can say, "That is one choice among many."

Between means you are in the middle of something, two different things. "I am between the bed and the wall." "I am sitting between Andy and Luke." Among is more general, it is less restrictive, you are more like in the middle of something. "I am among the monkeys." You are among them or surrounded by them. I can also be used: "Lower flu rates among children this year." So lower flu rates are occurring within the group of children.

To answer your question : YES. This article is right. Many people believe that 'between' is used when you have two items and 'among' when you have three or more. This is not the case. One of the commonest mistakes you see here on italki is a question like 'What is the difference among these three words?'. The correct question should be: What is the difference BETWEEN these three words? As Diane and Katherine have explained, 'among' is quite a general word, and it means being surrounded by, or being part of a group. If you considering a number of items, and you are viewing them as individual elements - such as in the question above - you use 'between', not among. You can use 'between' for two items, three items or twenty items.

You use "among" when three or more things are involved: To divide smth among the children. "Between" is used if smth is shared by two or more people: We drank a bottle of wine between us.
