Question about the GENKI workbooks! Do I need to buy edition 1 and 2? Hello everyone! I will be buying some text books to help me study Japanese. I've done some research on the Genki books and they seem to be a good choice! Although they are quite expensive.. I plan on buying the second edition genki 1 as well as the answer key. I would also like to buy the section edition genki 2, but I don't know if it is necessary yet? Do I need both to excel? Or can I just buy Genki 1 and answer key for the time being and still learn what I need? One more thing! Should I learn hiragana before buying genki? I read somewhere that you should, but I also heard it does teach hiragana too? I'm just confused, and very excited at the same time!! -.-' Thank you very much for reading! Christine

Go to www.memrise.com to learn Hiragana and Katakana! It took me a few days. Look for the basic Japanese course - it's all free.

The genki books have a hiragana and katakana chart in them! Also the first few chapters of the first book, teach you in English but then they stop so you have no choice but to learn hiragana and katakana. Each book comes with a disk so you can listen too. And I bought both because it saves me the time of ordering them at different points.

hi i am glad to answer your question. i think genki nihongou is a good choice. however minna nihongou is a good choice too. for the hiragana, it's the first step to study japanese i think, and the katakana also important to study japanese. do you have any japanese song you like? you can read the lyric in hirakana and listen to the song so that maybe you can remember the hirakana more efficient . that is my advise.thanks
