Bella d estate
Can someone explain to me the meaning of this sentence? "She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me; I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.

Hiya, yeah, I think this means he's not in the mood right now... like you said. He is also saying she's okay to look at, but not beautiful enough to interest him. He is also saying that he is not going to give his time to girls who other men are not interested in. I hope you are watching the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth. It's wonderful.

I know this is an old post but I’m curious about the second part of his senctence,” give consequence to ladies who have been slighted by other men.” Would that roughly translate to “give/spend time with ladies who other men don’t find attractive/likeable.”?

Hi there, The context is that Elizabeth does not have a partner to dance with. She is tolerable, or just acceptable in terms of her appearance, but not beautiful enough to tempt Darcy to dance with her. You are correct about humor - he is in no mood to seriously consider women who are not attractive enough to find a partner to dance with (they are thus "slighted" by other men).
