rank in first place Hi, there If I want to use the verb rank, should use the preposition "in" after ? "This university rankes/ranked first among the best universities in the world" or "This university ranks/ranked in first place(or position?) amog the best universities in the world" "Brazil ranks sixth in the ranking of the largest economies in the world" or "Brazil ranks in first place/position in the ranking of the largest economies in the world? Which ones would you say? And what's the difference between place and position? Please, help me Thank you so much!!

Study the "eight parts of speech" and the world of English will make more sense to you. "in" is what we call a preposition. Prepositions are always followed by a noun. "first" is not a noun => Ranked first. "place" is a noun => ranked in first place.

So normally both of these are grammatically correct but the first way is more common. For the second way, use the word place in this situation.
