What are the differences between "avoid" and "prevent"? Would you please explain about different usages of these two words with examples? Many thanks in advance.

'To prevent' - Specifically, to try and stop something from happening BEFORE it has happened. eg. 'Keep chemicals in a safe place to prevent accidents' or 'Use a condom to prevent unwanted pregnancy'! 'To avoid' - More generally means to try and stay away from something/someone/or a situation. eg. 'You should avoid that man', or 'After having an operation on your nose, you should avoid catching a cold'.

According to Longman English Dictionary, avoid does means "to prevent something bad from happening". For example, "road safety is taught to young children to avoid road accidents." However, avoid also means "to stay away from someone or something, or not use something". For example, "everyone seemed to be avoiding Nick," or "she carefully avoided his eyes." You would not say, "everyone seemed to be preventing Nick," or "she carefully prevented his eyes."

I think . . 1- #avoid the person try to prevent himself from the problems . But 2- #prevent . He tried to prevent the problem itself or prevent someone away the dangers. ... 1 - Dr say to the patient you should #avoid these bad habits or drugs ..... 2 - Dr say to the father you should #prevent your son from getting this drug ..... Its from my point of view.
