About the meaning of a Japanese song My favorite Japanese song is 神田川, the lyrics are beautiful , full of Japanese unique sensitivity. However I cannot understand what the sentence 貴方の優しさが恐かった really wants to say. Why was he afraid of the lover's 優しさ? Was that because he was poor and couldn't promise the lover a happy future ? Thank you!

The phrase「ただあなたの優しさが怖かった」is now in question. "Kandagawa" was written by Makoto Kitajo in 1973. This song was based on his college days. Around the period when the student movement in the Showa period flourished. Most of students, having a strong will for changing the world, got involved in the student movement. However, when he returned home exhausted from the student movement, his girlfriend was cooking dinner without complaining and they spent peaceful times at home. "I'd like to live in peace with her, rather than struggling." this kind of thought sometimes run through his mind. He had nothing to fear but feared that her tenderness could change his mind. This is what「ただあなたの優しさが怖かった」meant. The lyrics was written from the man's point of view, not from the woman's.

The character singing this song is a woman not man. Because, wasretakashira? is woman style of speaking. Watashi ga matasareta. If this person were a man he would say Ore, or Boku. Araigami ga shinmade hiete shows this person had long hair. Isshoni deyoune shows this phrase was said by a woman. At this time of Japan, man would say deyouna, or deyouze.

This sentence anata no yasashisa ga kowakatta is the most famous and unique part of this song. To understand the meaning you look at nanimo kowaku nakatta This woman said she had no anxiety for poverty, their love, their future life, and probably how people look at them. Only thing she felt strange is this man 's kindness. Why he is so kind to me? Nobody was kind to me like him in my life! His kindness was beyond her understanding. From this sentence we can understand his deep love to her.

It was in the vortex of the student's revolution in the 1970's. One day, when he come home dead tired after taking part in the demonstration, the lover prepared dinner. At that time, he thought like "Maybe...I should acquire certificate in teaching rather than taking part in the demonstration. If I do, we could be happy in the future". He wavered in his belief of revolution in Japan because of the lover's 優しさ. That's why 貴方の優しさが恐かった. I'm sorry for my poor English, make sense?
