左雄右雌（石狮子在大门两侧的摆放都是以人从大门里出来的方向为参照的），符合中国传统男左女右的阴阳哲学。放在门口左侧的雄狮一般都雕成右前爪玩弄绣球或者两前爪之间放一个绣球（也有雕成张着嘴的）；门口右侧雌狮则雕成左前爪抚摸幼狮或者两前爪之间卧一幼狮（也有雕成闭着嘴的）。大家也可以从狮子爪下的东西来辨别：如果爪下为球，象征着统一寰宇和无上权力，必为雄狮。爪下踩着幼狮，象征着子孙绵延，是雌狮。

中国 人常说：文人多大话，雄狮与雌狮，一看便知。 Chinese slang: "Most Chinese scholars are great liars", Here, the scholars they don't even know anything about the lions. By their own imagination and assumptions, the lions that placed in front of the main doors are in pair of male and female lions. You may be noticed that both lions are in pair of male lions. The Chinese scholars' assumptions were wrong in the first place. So, it is neither the Chinese tradition nor the European culture.

Lion represents British. In Africa, Lion is the king of the Jungle, the male lion protect the female lion, but the female lion has to serve the male lion. Hong Kong was protected by the British, and the Chinese has to serve the British. Most people misunderstand that Lion is the symbol for Chinese. In fact, it is the symbol for British. The traditional symbol for Chinese, "Kiren (麒麟)" were placed on both side of the building at the entrance of the main door for the purpose to guard against the evil spirit. 左雄右雌 is the example of the misunderstanding. The male and the female lion has the different appearances. If you don't belive me, watch the movie "Lion King". it tells you the different between the male and the female lions. You may be noticed that the lions today that were placed at the door front, they are both male lions.
