My view is that when teaching a language, speaking should always have the highest priority. I know that eventually my students want to learn French to engage in meaningful conversations and enjoy doing it. And I know that for that, they need a pronunciation that people will praise them for, they need to say things the right way (which means using the right grammar and syntax), overall they need to feel confident about their French, and they need a lot of speaking practice.
