Hawaiian Trip Planning Lesson ②: Your Custom Journey with Culture, Food & Pidgin

Hawaiʻi is a mix plate—literally! 🍱 In this fun and tasty lesson, you’ll learn the difference between “local food” and “local-local” (traditional Hawaiian) food.

Local food is what most people in Hawaiʻi eat today—an amazing blend of Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese, Korean, and other immigrant influences. Think: spam musubi, loco moco, saimin, garlic shrimp!

Local-local food refers to the traditional dishes of Native Hawaiians—like poi, kalua pig, laulau, ʻulu, and more. These foods have deep cultural meaning and are still loved and celebrated in Hawaiian homes and at big gatherings (lūʻau).

Break down the difference between “local” and “Hawaiian” food
Learn the history behind popular dishes
Practice food-related vocabulary and phrases (including some Pidgin!)
Share recommendations on where to try these foods during your trip

Local vs. Local-Local: What’s the Difference in Hawaiian Food?

There is no official certification, but I presented at the Annual Native Hawaiian Education Association to Native Hawaiians in 2013 and 2017

Aimed to enhance instructional practices and leadership skills. Focused on student learning, cultural diversity, technological, and educational research.

I earned my B.A. in Psychology from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, which helps me understand how people learn, think, and communicate. This allows me to adapt lessons to different learning styles, making sure students feel comfortable and confident. My background also helps me read social cues, adjust to individual needs, and give clear, supportive guidance. Whether I’m teaching language, offering cultural tips, or providing travel advice, I use psychology to make learning engaging, practic
