A person was asleep on his left, and I tried to turn him and had him lie on his back. Which sentence would you use? 1. I turned him to his back. 2. I turned him on his back. 3. I rolled him to his back. 4. I rolled him on his back. 5. I rolled him over to his back. 6. I rolled him over on his back. 7. I rolled him over on to his back. 8. I rolled him on to his back. I can find all kinds of preposition combinations. Which one sounds more natural to you? How would you say it? Thank you very much and good morning. :)

Was asleep is fine. We would say, he was asleep on his left side..

Although it was not part of your question, another comment that I would make is that you said he was sleeping on his left. That would mean that he was located to the left of himself and sleeping. The best way to say that would be he was sleeping on his left side.

To his back would mean in the direction of his back. That really doesn't make sense. On his back means that you rolled him so that he is lying on his back with his back down against the floor.

Numbers 4, 7 and 8 are colloquial English. You could hear any one of these used, in the US at least.
