Maybe you should consider hiring a teacher while following a book and using some good apps like DuoLingo?

Hi Mario! I would recommend you find a teacher who either specializes in teaching beginners or has a lot of experience in teaching them. Teaching an Intermediate or Advanced student is very different to teaching a beginner, so finding the right teacher is important, especially because your initial experiences will likely determine whether your level of enthusiasm goes up or down!

I would recommend you start slowly, revising everything you learn many times until you have internalised the basics. Get speaking as soon as possible (from day 1, if possible). Don't wait for 'the right time', just get started. You may reach a saturation point after a few months, at which point it's ok to take a break.

Btw there's a fun app called 'Tako's Japanese' for Kanji and Hiragana that you might enjoy, be sure to check it out. Have fun!

Having a teacher or tutor would give you a good start, and make sure you expose yourself to the language more. Music, tv, movies - there's a huge market out there for these things in Japanese and it'll help you get a feel for the rhythm and general sounds involved. Learning to write is going to be more challenging, though. Make sure any textbooks you find can cover all of the script types (hiragana, katakana and kanji - there's a ton of good ones listed on Amazon if you want to browse), and be prepared to go through each set methodically. It's a lot to remember and having a teacher enlisted to help you will go a long way toward improving much faster than on your own.

Duolingo is a nice application. Besides, I recommend Busuu and Memrise as well. Good luck!
