We learned "Doko desu ka?" last time. In this discussion, we are going to learn about some expected answers of this question.

In a big mall or department
お手洗い は １階 と ３階 に ございます。
Otearai wa ikkai to sangai ni gozaimasu.
The rest rooms are located on the first and third floors.
In a restaurant
お手洗い は 出て 右奥 に ございます。
Otearai wa dete migioku ni gozaimasu.
(When you step out this restaurant, you'll find) the rest room (is) behind the right corner.
In a supermarket
お手洗い は 野菜 売り場 の 隣 に なります。
Otearai wa yasai uriba no tonari ni narimasu.
The rest room is next to the vegetable section.
These are the structures.
[The place you asked] は[direction/place] に ございます。
[The place you asked] wa [direction/place] ni gozaimasu.
or
[The place you asked] は[direction/place] に なります。
[The place you asked] wa [direction/place] ni narimasu.
The "...に ございます。... ni gozaimasu." and "... に なります。... ni narimasu." are polite expressions and have almost the same meaning which indicates "exist" or "locate" in this case but "... に なります。... ni narimasu." expresses more conditional meaning. Another example of "... に なります。... ni narimasu." will be "1000円 に なります。1000 en ni narimasu." ((the total) is 1000 yen) at a check-out counter. <em>However, we do not use "gozaimasu" and "narimasu" when we answer about things we own.</em>

The more casual expressions of "... に ございます。... ni gozaimasu." and "... に なります。...ni narimasu." are "... に あります。... ni arimasu." and "... に ある。... ni aru." The "ある aru" is the basic verb of "to exist". The "ありますarimasu" is more polite expression of "ある aru" modified with "ます masu". (ある aru+ ます masu= あります arimasu) In spite of these different expressions, these are basically indicating the same meaning, but only the matter of the politeness. Stuff at expensive stores tend to use very polite expressions like "ございます。gozaimasu".
Today, we learned some of the basic structures of the expected answers of "どこですか Dokodesuka" question. In the next discussion, we will learn more details about the directions and the expressions of places.
