Wanted: suggestions for a Chinese mandarin textbook.

Good afternoon.

I have been studying Chinese on my own for a few years and I think it's time to buy myself a textbook to give my learning a little more structure. I need something I can use mostly independently. I want to have explanations for Chinese grammar, spoken and written exercises to complete (with answers supplied) as well as Chinese text to practice reading. It must have pinyin though as I can't function without it yet.

I probably need to start pretty much "at the beginning" although I would say my level of understanding would be equal to a patchy 2nd year high school student.

Has anyone used a textbook that they would recommend that would suit my needs? All suggestions gratefully received. :)

Most universities in Taiwan provide Chinese classes for non-Chinese.

Several of my classmates are qualified teachers.

I know they had learnt Pinyin also.

You may ask the universities if there are teaching materials for sale.

如果你说话的对象是中国人,只要注意词义就好了。语法基本不会产生歧义。

If you talk to a chinese you don't need care about the gammer just need focus on the meaning of word . but it is just for daily expression.

New practical Chinese reader is what I use. I like it a whole lot and if you go through the whole series you learn I think 3000 characters and much more.mit focuses on reading and writing which is what I like most, but speaking and listening what have to be done elsewhere.
