Oxford Online Placement Test. - 20120711

I have been curious about the OOPT test for a long time now, yet, I was simply too lazy to take it since it was said to last for 90 minutes. However, last night, I finally decided to actually do it, and surprisingly, it only took me only 39 minutes in total to finish it. For some questions, I felt so confident about the answers that I did not even bother listening to the test’s dialogue a second time.

Unfortunately, after it was all over and graded, it turned out that I had only answered half of those particular questions correctly, which left me feeling rather chagrined about my decision to try to complete the test as soon as possible. I should have realized that something was wrong, but I did not, and so I only managed to score a B2. How about if I test again with questions that are easier for me to understand?

Hi Dora. Whatever changes I made were to allow your sentences to sound more natural to my native ears, to clarify your points, and for ease of reading. Sincerest apologies if I have misinterpreted. I hope that this helps you. J.

*Whenever I have proctored such tests, I always made it a point to tell the students to make full use of the allotted time--either by working on each question in detail, or by reviewing their answers if they finish sooner. The test is about what you know, not how fast you can complete it. Thus, there is no positive benefit to finishing it quickly and immediately turning it in, but there may be a negative one as you experienced first-hand. I can only trust that this will serve as a good lesson for you in the future… (*-^) Regardless, by scoring a B2 after inadvertently missing so many questions is a good indication that you are, most likely, in truth, a C1.

*Why finish? don't you mean do/take the test?
*2 I don't really understand the meaning. How will the test have easier questions?

Hi, please don't feel bad. Its good that you have identified that your score was due to not listening a second time to the dialogue. I am sure if you take the test again you will get a better score. I also tend to listen or read things too quickly. Please don't give up. Best wishes, Sally
