Exercise: Complaint Letter to the Landlord for the Faulty Heating System TASK DESCRIPTION: You are a student at an English language school in Brighton and are living in private accommodation with other flat mates. You have not had hot water or heating for some time. The landlord’s workmen have tried to fix the problem but without success. Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter: • state your reason for writing • describe the problems and explain how you feel • propose a solution and risk the landlord to take action MY LETTER: Dear Mr Smith, I am writing to you to complain about the poor condition of the accommodation, and request you to resolve the issues. We are your tenants living in Room 404, No 5, XXX Road. Since last month, we had had neither hot water nor heating. Tough your workmen were sent to repair the problem, they failed. And so far, this problem has not yet been solved. As the weather is getting increasingly cold, we feel not able to stand the coldness. John, one of the tenants, who worked as a labourer in a nearby car factory, sweat a lot after coming home from work. But he could not stand the cold water, and have to travel for 15 minutes for a bath. Additionally, I will have important examinations in a few weeks, but every night I shiver and cannot fall asleep. Peter had had a bad cold and had spent days to recover. I trust that you will consider this issue seriously and take appropriate measures. You should either spend more money and hire better repair people to get it fixed as soon as possible, or accommodate us somewhere else. Otherwise, we would be faced to resort to the use of legal procedures. Thank you. Yours sincerely, Melaminefree Wang

Exercise: Complaint Letter to the Landlord for the Faulty Heating System

TASK DESCRIPTION:

You are a student at an English language school in Brighton and are living in private accommodation with other flat mates. You have not had hot water or heating for some time. The landlord’s workmen have tried to fix the problem but without success.

Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter:
• state your reason for writing
• describe the problems and explain how you feel
• propose a solution and risk the landlord to take action

MY LETTER:

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing to you to complain about the poor condition of the our accommodation, and request that you to resolve the outstanding issues.

We are your tenants (this is implied by the first sentence, and could be omitted) living in Room 404, No 5, XXX Road. For the Since last ('since last' is okay, but this would read better) past month, we hadve had neither hot water nor heating. Though your workmen were sent to repair the problem, they failed. And so far, this problem has not yet been solved. (resolved would be better)

As the weather is getting increasingly cold, we feel not able unable to stand the coldness ('coldness' seems a bit strange here) temperature. John, one of the tenants, who worksed as a labourer in (again okay, but I would likely just say "works at a") at a nearby car factory, sweat a lot after coming home from work. (this implies he sweats after he arrives home) and is very sweaty after work, but cannot he could not stand the cold water, and has have to travel for 15 minutes for a bath. Additionally, I will have important examinations in a few weeks, but every night I shiver and cannot fall asleep. Peter hads had a bad cold and hads spent days to recovering.

I trust that you will consider this issue seriously and take appropriate measures. You should either spend more money and hire better repair people to get it fixed as soon as possible, or accommodate us somewhere else. Otherwise, we will would be forced faced to resort to the use of legal procedures.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
Melaminefree Wang
