English is important, but nowadays English is a need. There are hundreds of millions of people who can communicate in English. I think that knowing only English is not enough. By the way, who says that you can't be fluent in English and at the same time be at an intermediate level in two or three other languages??? Yes, it's true... if you spend all your time on English, instead of learning two or three languages... you're going to reach some good results more quickly. I often read some posts from Russian speakers like... "хочу выучить английский язык". I think this is wrong. My answer always is (even if it sounds like a cliché) : Выучить можно стих или песню. Выучить язык невозможно, даже свой родной. My point is, it doesn't matter how good you are at some language, you'll never be able to master it wholly. There are many aspects in every language that even native speakers won't be able to explain or use. I would say if there are languages you want to learn except for English, go for it. Two, three, four, ten? It doesn't matter as long as the process pleases you. Because I don't think one can go far in learning a language without having a passion for it. Also you should remember that reaching an intermediate level in a certain language may be more difficult than becoming fluent in English. Anyway, you can choose some languages you really like or find useful, learn some basics and then decide if it's worth to learn them or not. Regarding employment... I think every language is useful, and sometimes knowing some relatively "rare" language may help you to find a good job. If not, learning a new language makes you smarter. So it's still a good thing.. In any case, no one can help you with this question, but yourself. You should decide it.

Privet. It depends on whether you need English for work or other languages. Only you can decide what's best for you.

*Which would be better, speaking fluent English or being on an intermediate level in many languages? In my opinion I think fully knowing how to speak and write a language is better, then learning other languages when you got the hang of the first. English is spoken in many, many palces and it can really be helpful to speak it fluently. (both for job options and for making new acquaintances)

My fluent English is doing me little good here in China... Besides providing an income... When it comes to living, a little more knowledge of the Chinese languages would go a long way. On the other hand, I could not see giving up some English knowledge to trade for other language knowledge. You have a good question here!
