So long no see The first time I heard it, I thought that the speaker spoke bad English. What is it? Is it a sentence? A good one? Is it English in the first place?! Why do people say it this way? It reminds me of children when they try to develop a sense of how words fit together in order to communicate with people around them using their minimum knowledge of language:) Thanks in advance!

Do you mean "Long time no see" ? It's just slang for " It's been a long time since I last saw you. What's new in your life?"

I agree with Jura: it's a variation on "long time no see", and not a very good one. You're right to think the speaker would have a rudimentary level of English. Such is the price of looking cool these days. ;)

Actually it is Chinese Pidgin English. It's a direct translation of 好久不见 (Hǎojiǔ bùjiàn), which is literally "long time, no see" :) Similar Chinese Pidgin English phrases are "no can do" and "look-see" from 看見.

Actually it would not be too strange to hear the following: Sooooo long no see. (Emphasis on "soooo") Here, "so long" means "a very long time". It does not mean "goodbye".

"Me so horny" - that's got nothing to do with it, it just made me laugh. Hehehe seriously, I don't think I can do any better than what's already been said, but we say "long time, no see". "So long" is how Americans sometimes say goodbye. I assume it must be referring to a journey that will take a while, or possibly "a long time" before they see each other again, meaning they're very fond of each other, and any time apart will feel like a long time. So heavy, so funny, so long etc We never say "so long" unless we're copying Americans for some light hearted banter, like we may say "howdy" like a cowboy. The only times I like wonky English, are when it's funny or when it fits music. "so long, no see" pah!! But nothing wrong with Stevie Wonder's, "It's been so long, since I've felt a wanting hand, that I feel the world's cold, been so long, that I say to myself, it's time to find myself again". Oooh the irony :) "now put her in the buck!" :D
