Is the word "wilderness" a countable noun, or uncountable?
I wonder if the word "wilderness" is a countable noun. So if I say that "Egdon Heath is a wilderness that appeared in Thomas Hardy's works", is that ok? Thank you very much!!!
It is countable.
It's usually used in the singular with the definite article 'the wilderness', though 'a wilderness' is possible. You could also refer to various 'wildernesses' around the world, but this would be unusual.
