The definitions of these two words are similar, as shown below. house: a building in which a person or a family lives home: a house or apartment where a person or a family lives The main difference between them is that house is more concrete. House refers to a building in which someone lives. In contrast, a home can refer either to a building or to any location that a person thinks of as the place where she lives and that belongs to her. A home can be a house or an apartment, but it could also be a tent, a boat, or an underground cave. A home can even be something abstract, a place in your mind. When you say, “Let’s go home,” you are probably not talking simply about going to the physical structure where you live. You are talking about being in the special place where you feel most comfortable and that belongs to you. I hope this helps.

The meanings overlap. They are almost interchangeable. I can't think of any case where either of the words would actually be wrong. "House" emphasizes the physical building itself. "Home" emphasizes its use as a place to live and strongly suggests feelings of emotional attachment. I n the United States, realtors selling houses always call them "homes" because of the pleasant feelings the word evokes. A famous poem by the sentimental, once-popular U.S. poet Edgar Guest says "It takes a heap [of] living in a house [to] make it home." If I were showing a visitor our neighborhood, I would say "Most of the houses here are two stories tall, with a basement and an attic." Then when I led them to our door I would say "Welcome to our home." But you definitely could say "Most of the homes here are two stories tall" and "Welcome to our house," and it would not sound odd.
