It can be a verb. "To further," means to increase ones chances of doing something. For example: "He studied furiously every night to further his ambition to become a doctor." It is also a measure of progress over time.. for example: "I feel that, having studied English for 5 years now, I should be further long," means that the person speaking feels that they should have made more progress, given the length of time that they have been studying English. There is a similar word "farther," which is used with physical distances.. for example, we would say: "Los Angeles is farther away from Chicago than Detroit is." This means that Detroit is nearer to Chicago than Los Angeles.

"The car dealer said I would have to pay $25,000 for the car, and I was willing to pay that; but when he went further and tried to add a $400 'documentation fee' to the price, I refused." "Edward FitzGerald's translation of 'The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam' went through five editions, each one making some further changes." "L. Frank Baum's first Oz book, 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,' introduced us to the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. His second book was entitled 'The Marvelous Land of Oz: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman.'" "Everything I've done has been in furtherance of my goals."

"Further" and "Farther" are also often mixed up by Native speakers, so you have to be aware of both meanings for both words.
