"get hooked up to" meaning? Besides meaning "connected to" , can it mean "get attracted to"? Thank you.Thank you for your explanation. But I have already known its original meaning. The context is... Let's say a man called Henry who went to a station to investigate who is wiretapping his walkie-talkies. But no one was there. He found a lot of sophisticated equipment there but he thought that was not his priority. He just wanted to find out who was tracking him. So he said "I'd better not stick around to get hooked up to it." (I write it down from memory, it is not precise). So can the phrase mean "get attracted to"?

I guess in that context, there's probably a play-on-words, with the double meaning of "hook up". I'm not sure how you understand "To be attracted to something", though. In that context, it would rather mean "To get entangled, to become absorbed by this mystery", as far as I'm concerned.

I'm 90% sure that the original meaning of the word "hook up" involved an actual, literal hook. It was part of the mechanical system for bringing electric power into the house from a utility pole. A supporting cable, which didn't carry electricity, ran from the utility pole and was attached to the hook. The hook took the strain of the cable. To bring electricity to a house, it needed to be "hooked up." So "hook up" came to mean electrical connection, then any kind of connection. I say "90% sure" because I haven't been able to Google a confirmation of this, and unfortunately I can't find a picture of an old house with something that looks like a visible hook.

"To hook up with" means to have sex with somebody, to have a relation together or just plainly to do something together. "To be hooked on sombeody" means to be addicted to that person. (Be attention to the prepositions) "To be/get hooked up to" can mean to be connected to something through Internet. (I'm hooked up to the library now, means, I'm connected to the library's network.) 'To hook up (one thing to another)' is basically used to plug two things together. The other meanings are abstracted from the primary meaning. Phrasal verbs in English can be quite subtle to manipulate... If confused, buy the MacMillan Phrasal Verb Plus, it's always a good reference :)
