[Chinese Literature] Do you know "Romance of the Three Kingdoms"? "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is one of the four popular classical Chinese literature. Almost all the Chinese know about this novel (inside out). What about you? What about the Chinese language learning community in your country?

I read them all, but I had to go to China to get them. In Germany these books are seldom available in German, but in English. The TV-series (hong lou meng/san guo yan yi) on VCD/DVD is in my box. Hehe... san guo yan yi: Romance of Three Kingdoms ("Die Geschichte der Drei Reiche"/"Die drei Reiche") Incomplete translation, not available anymore. D: A lot of characters, intrigue, interesting. xi you ji: Journey to the West ("Die Reise nach Westen"/"Die Reise in den Westen"...oder wie Hsüan Tsang den Buddhismus nach China holte). Not in print anymore. Sometimes only parts of it are translated to German. I have one issue with pictures, intended to be a children's book. You can watch the american TV-film "Monkey King" (vaguely related) from time to time. D: Boring, Monkey makes always the same mistakes, the monk is crying, the pig hungry... hong lou meng: A Dream of Red Mansions ("Der Traum der Roten Kammer" ...oder die Geschichte vom Stein) Few translations, only one available. D: Boring, a lot of peple having nothing to do, visiting each other. shui hu zhuan: Water Margin ("Die Rebellen vom Liang Shan Po"/"Die Rebellen vom Liang Shan Moor"/"Die Räuber vom Liang Schan Moor") Not in print anymore. Some can remember it as a japanese TV series from 1977, on the air in Germany in those days. Still (or again) available on DVD and VHS. D: Interesting, many characters, a villain, a hero... Maybe these books are too... long or too distant to be accepted by common audience. People interested in China have at least heard about them, of course. Wait, I've got another idea: de gong ji an: Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee ("Merkwürdige Kriminalfälle des Richters Di") a translation by Robert van Gulik, who also wrote a lot of new crime stories about this character. Made up from traditional texts. These are widely circulated and reprinted. Perhaps his style meets the western taste better. D., who likes san guo yan yi and the Di novels best.

In China , there is a say: Young do not read Romance of the Three Kingdoms, elders do not read Tales of the Marshes. From this saying you may know some about this tale.

Many Korean people know 三国志 as well. I had read it over and over again and still have all the books since my dad gave me it as a graduation gift over a decade ago.
