Hey Halbert, In English the word is always "surname" - This is the hereditary name passed from a man to his wife and children, it is a very old tradition in Britain. Be cautious about using the internet to define words there are a lot of people that cannot spell properly. The nouns 'sir' and 'name' do not equal 'surname' the words have different meanings and origins.

A lot of English words come from French as it was the language of Henry 8th court. The French is SURNOM
