Verbatim is when you recite something -- a poem, a conversation, a chapter from a book, etc. --EXACTLY the way it was said or written.
Example 1:
Mary: My boyfriend was being mean to me.
Sue: What did he say?
Mary: Very hurtful things.
Sue: What kinds of things?
Mary: You want me to tell you VERBATIM what he said? Okay, I'll tell you. He said, "You are fat, ugly, stupid, and I don't love you anymore."
Sue : He called you fat, ugly, and stupid??
Mary: That's what he said. VERBATIM.
Example 2: You have a favorite movie. You have seen the movie over ten times. Your favorite part of the movie is when the star tells his boss off, and then walks off the job. When you come to that part of the movie, you are able to say the words right along with the actor, VERBATIM. Every word, no mistakes. You have seen the movie so many times that you memorized the scene.
Example 3: You hear your favorite song. You sing along , not missing any words, pausing when the singer pauses. You have memorized the song VERBATIM.
I apologize for the long answer. Hope it helps you understand what "verbatim" means.
