eugene, arch = self consciously playful or teasing arch = marked by a deliberate or and often forced irony She was too arch for words. Words could not describe how arch she was. The expression "too cute for words" has a similar meaning. cute = clever shrewd cute = pretty cute = clever or shrewd in a underhanded or forced manner She was too cute for words.
