Remember your overseas vacation in 1993?
At an amusement park by the sea, you met Barney, a local
resident who had been studying English his entire life.
And yet, when you asked him what his favorite animal was,
he froze. He stammered. He looked up at some trees.
Now why was that?
Indeed, hardly anyone there could speak any English at all.
The next day you went on a train ride. In your compartment
were three backpackers from places you couldn’t pronounce.
Still, they talked to you about camping ... cactus … discos ...
pyramids...fleas...watermelons...bungee jumping...telepathy
UFOs…ponds...off-the-wall jokes . . . all in proper English.
So what was their secret?
Hmmm. Good question.

Я как преподаватель
"Hello! Where's the Lake Town?" Bray asked an 81-year-old
tending some cows. She gave him a puzzled look. "Gee, nobody
here speaks English," he thought.
And although Bray had studied the local language at school for
nine years, he had pretty much forgotten everything.
So he kept pedaling along, trying to figure out how to get to the
town, and his accommodation. It was getting dark.
Suddenly, a teenager came into view; he was gathering raspberries,
cranberries, gooseberries. To Bray's relief — and astonishment —
the teen was able to give him directions. In perfect English.
“How did you master English?” Bray asked him.
“Oh, from watching cartoons on TV when I was young,” he answered.

In class, you will NOT be asked to memorize lines such as
“I beg your pardon. I was wondering if you could please tell me the price of a third-class, round-trip plane ticket with a student discount for a window-seat in a non-smoking section, departing from Kalamazoo at 3:13 in the morning of Thursday, the 31st of December and arriving in Saskatoon at 11:33 in the evening.”
Or, “In order to get to the flea market, walk along this boulevard. At the eighth traffic light, you’ll see a subway station to your left. Go down and catch train number 181. After 18 stops, get off. Take the 80 bus down the avenue for eight blocks. Then turn right, walk 88 yards — and you’re there. You CAN’T miss it!"

After more then two years meeting I can say that not only did he help me keep my speech flowing but also he broadened my horizons about the things of the world. This has greatly contributed to my feeling more confident during my travels
