Elena

I had my first lesson with Elena, and I’m very happy. She is friendly, professional, and made me feel comfortable. Her teaching is clear and easy to follow. The lesson was interesting and helpful, and I’m excited to keep learning with her.

I really liked Elena during my trial lesson in Canto! I already came into the lesson knowing elementary-level conversational skills. She gauged my level and interests so that we could have conversations about things I was interested in (e.g. Chinese culture, playing mahjong, hanging out with friends during the week) and she said that in our next lessons she can either teach me more about Chinese culture and/or continue talking about hobbies that bring me closer to my heritage. I’m super excited to continue and I haven’t had this much fun and excitement in a long time! I loved that it wasn’t super structured and it was just conversations (but I think the tutor gauges what you need, so structure can change depending on need and skill level). Planning on taking more lessons from her!

Elena has been a great conversation partner and teacher. I have studied Cantonese with her for a couple of months. We sometimes use materials from the Learn to Speak Cantonese textbooks, and sometimes we just chat so that I can practice my speaking. She pretty much exclusively speaks in Cantonese during our lessons, which pushes me to ask for clarification or vocabulary. As somebody who is learning the language to improve communication within my own family, I appreciate that Elena is flexible and helps me find vocabulary that is relevant to my own language-learning needs.
