Lily's Chinese

I thought I could learn Mandarin by teaching myself, but after about 4 months of self study, I realised this was not a good choice for me. So I found out about italki and booked a trial lesson with Lily. It has been a year since that trial lesson and I have had at least 1 lesson per week with Lily ever since. A year ago I think only knew about 2 words in Mandarin, but I am now typing, reading and conversing in Mandarin. I still have a long way to go with my studies, but I would have definitely given up learning without Lily. She is a very patient and attentive teacher. Lily takes the time to ensure that my pronunciation is spot on, and ensures that I understand specific grammar points by asking questions, and getting me to answer them in different ways. I decided to book a trip to China this year, and because of Lily’s lessons, feel confident that I’ll be able to get by! I would definitely recommend Lily as a teacher to anyone thinking about learning Mandarin.

I lived in China for 7.5 years and have had many different Chinese tutors. Lily is by far the best one I've had as she pushes my speaking skills more than any other. She finds creative ways to ask questions and tie the vocabulary into my daily life and experiences. By modeling how sentences are constructed, I am able to figure out the grammar and if I am ever unsure, she breaks it down on screen. I have probably learned more grammar rules in 10 lessons than I ever did in years of having a tutor in China. I would highly recommend giving Lily a shot as your teacher! She won't disappoint!

3 reasons why Lily is an amazing teacher: 1.Lily is always on time, her professionalism is what sets her apart from all the other tutors. 2.I’ve had over a dozen lessons with her and she is consistent with her lessons. I entered the classroom with 3 test questions and 4 choices each question. I wanted to know if my selected answer was correct and why others were incorrect or correct if I answered wrong. We did just that. Very satisfied with my experience and Lily even had time to notate parsing of sentences that I read through so that I would have more native-sounding reading in the future. Bonus!

I love the fact that whenever possible, Lily doesn't speak to you in English but in Chinese, writing at the same time the translation in English. So you hear almost only chinese during the lesson.
