What is the role of memory in defining the meaning of Plum blossoms in these poems? “in former times, the sight of the Moon— I reckon—how many times Has it shone on me, by the plum trees, playing the flute? I called to the Jade one, not heeding the pure coolness, to climb and pluck flowers with me.” the plum blossoms is an image which makes me recall the past — the connection between she and I. “I only think it odd that the sparse flowers Beyond the bamboo— their fragrance, cold, enters the Jade banquet mat.” the plum blossoms are the objects that I blame, even though I can’t bear to see them, their fragrance forces me to recall the past. “I sigh and send them to her when the road is distant, And the night snow begins to pile high. I always recall where we once held hands: a thousand trees weighed upon the cold Emerald of West lake.” “a thousand trees” symbolizes a prosperous occasion in the past, contrasting the present occasion “the sparse flowers” which symbolizes Decay and death. “again, petal after petal, all blown away: How many times will I get to see them?” implies that I won't see her again.
