What's the difference between "go through", "get through", "get by" and "get over". Can I use all of them when I want to talk about a difficult situation?

"Get by" is fairly simple. It is a way of saying that someone is managing/coping in spite of a life situation that is not easy (not necessarily one that is very difficult). "He struggles but he gets by". "She gets by on a very small wage". "Get over" is often about dealing with emotions. We often talk about "getting over" a break up (end of a relationship) or a big dissapointment. "You need to get over her" "Get through" and "Go through" are a little trickier. "Get through" implies progress through a tough time or situation, "go through" refers to a time of general endurance but doesn't necessarily imply progress. So we might be "going through some major problems at work", this doesn't imply that we are improving our situation. "I am getting through some problems at work" might mean I am optimistic about solving the problems. Hope that helps!

There are subtle differences. "Go through" emphasizes the experience of the difficult situation. "I am going through a divorce". "Get through" emphasizes the completion of the difficult situation. "It will be difficult, but I will get through this divorce". "Get by" focuses on the economic aspect and suggests just barely surviving the experience. "How will you manage without the extra income? I will get by somehow." "Get over" is usually used in the expression "Get over it." which is what you say to someone when you are tired of their (emotional) complaints about a difficult situation. "It is hard for me to accept that I will never see her again. Get over it!" It is generally not a nice thing to say, but you could say it to a friend to get them to move on. There are probably other subtleties, but these are the ones that first come to mind.

Hello! Go through = to be in the midst of a situation. "She has gone through a lot of pain since her father died." Get through = you are in a bad situation, but this phrase is slightly more hopeful. It implies getting to the end of the situation and improving. "How am I going to get through this process alone?" "Get by" = to get used to a situation that is not ideal & be able to do it fine but still struggling, it can refer to economy. "I earn just enough money to get by every month." "Get over" = to overcome something. "I know I should be happy by now, but I just can't get over failing that exam." I hope to have helped you!
