IELTS 2 Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed? It is true that thanks to the advent of technology, many people prefer working as self-employed such as entrepreneurs or freelancers than to be employed in a company or organization. There are many reasons for this growing trend while the self-employed may face many disadvantages at work. Firstly, more and more working individuals are getting attracted to work for themselves due to its flexibility. Self-employment offers flexible working hours or allows workers to take leaves depending on their needs. For example, many gig workers who work on demand using online apps such as Uber or food delivery services. They can work when they need income or have time and adjust work schedules by themselves. Secondly, many people choose to be entrepreneurs or freelancers to pursue their career goals. Self-employment allows them to work on what they are interested in instead of spending time on tasks provided by their employees. For example, many freelancers sell their products or services online suing their skills. Finally, people choose to work as a self-employed or start up their own business as there are currently many means to support those who are interested in being self-employed. For example, many public and private banks currently offer loans to support start-ups. The rapid growth of online apps and gig economy has also made it easy for individuals to be self-employed. Although the benefits of this work seem to be endless, this type of work also has drawbacks. One is the uncertainty of work availability. Since many young professionals prefer to work on their own, competition in finding possible work is getting increasingly tough. Moreover, these people also cannot avail benefits that common company employees get like insurances, or skills training.
