Should foreigners even try to learn Tagalog? Is it worth it for foreigners to bother learning Tagalog? - I have felt conflicted about this recently. When traveling in the Philippines, it rarely seems necessary to be able to speak Tagalog. Almost all Filipinos can speak some English and most can speak far better English than I can ever hope to speak Tagalog, sooooo...should we even try?

I spent two years in the Philippines and I was able to pick up a little of Tagalog, am fluent in Cebuano, and Ilonggo. Filipinos love hearing it and are way shocked when they find out you speak their languages. Plus if you know the language you can understand what people are saying about you whether good or bad and it comes in handy when you are shopping and trying to make a bargain.

I'd say it's worth it, because Filipinos love hearing foreigners speaking their language (even when done poorly). They're really laughing with you, which can make it fun once you get used to it. Tagalog is useful for foreigners when you want to make good first impressions or get better deals on public transportation or in markets.

Well it depends on you. Even if we say Tagalog is worth studying it's still you who will decide. Most of the foreigners don't actually see the importance of learning Tagalog, they would prefer learning other languages than studying our language. I couldn't blame them since we all have freedom to choose. But learning our language gives you a lot of advantages especially when you visit our one-of-a-kind tourist spots, putting up a business, studying, exploring, making friends and living here.^^ And there are Filipinos all around the world so you can really use it.

Yes, Sir, you're right. I can say most of the Filipinos can speak English well but still they are ASIANS. I just want to tell you that when a foreigner tries to speak tagalog, he/she makes us happy. Yes, we are indeed people of smiles and we really love it when a foreigner loves our culture and language. But, I don't know. Miss Mareeyaah is right. It's up to you.
