The most uplifting and the biggest downer (cae sb's task - review)
In this review I’m going to describe the most encouraging and the most depressing film to help the Cinefelia readers decide which films to choose and to avoid.
“Never Let Me Go” directed by Mark Romanek stars Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightley. Set in not distant future somewhere in North Europe, the film tells the story of three friends growing in a special boarding school. Two girls and a boy never see anything beyond the school gate. They live in their own world hoping for the bright future, sharing sorrows and joys and don’t know that their destiny is already settled. The characters are appealing and true to live and that’s understandably as the director worked with a quite experienced cast. The camera-man and composer’s work s also deserves high praise. However, the plot of the film is really depressing. I personally felt fear and even rage because the main characters were so obedient, they even didn’t try to rebel in such a cruel society.
Contrarily, “It’s a Wonderful Life” is much more positive film directed by Frank Capra co-starring James Stewart and Donna Reed. The main character George Bailey gives up his dreams to help other people and decides to commit suicide right before Christmas but is stopped by his guardian angel. The latter shows how important George’s life is and how it would affect his friends and relatives if he weren’t born at all.
Though “It’s a Wonderful Life” seems to have a quite simple plot, it’s so warming that I definitely recommend watching it to relax and enjoy the life, especially on Christmas Eve, whereas “Never Let Me Go” is suitable only for those who desire to watch a serious and thought-provoking film.
