Für den Fall, dass jemand meinen Text auf Hochdeutsch lesen möchte: Lass mich ein paar zusätzliche Bemerkungen und persönliche Erfahrungen zum Niederdeutschen (Niederdeutsch, Plattdeutsch, Platt), insbesondere in Nordrhein-Westfalen, beisteuern. Es ist umstritten, ob Plattdeutsch/Niederdeutsch eine eigenständige Sprache oder ein Dialekt ist. Niederdeutsch ist jedoch als Regionalsprache im Sinne der Europäischen Charta der Regional- oder Minderheitensprachen anerkannt und zählt somit nicht als Dialekt des Hochdeutschen. Aus persönlichen Gesprächen mit der Familie weiß ich, dass auch im Ruhrgebiet als Ballungsraum nach dem 2. Weltkrieg die ältere Generation noch Plattdeutsch gesprochen hat, es aber in den letzten Jahrzehnten dort völlig verschwunden ist. Im nordrhein-westfälischen Münsterland (eine Region um die Stadt Münster, ca. 50 - 100 km nördlich des Ruhrgebiets), das immer noch landwirtschaftlich geprägt ist, spricht die Großelterngeneration untereinander noch Platt, die Elterngeneration kann es zwar verstehen, spricht es aber kaum noch, die heutigen Kinder und Jugendlichen hören es noch von ihren Großeltern und verwenden es untereinander für coole Sprüche/Phrasen, die sie in ihr ansonsten gesprochenes Hochdeutsch einbauen. Auf diese Weise signalisieren sie auch, dass sie aus dieser Region stammen und vielleicht auf einem Bauernhof aufgewachsen sind. Aus einer binationalen Familie (Mutter Deutsche, Vater Niederländer aus den Niederlanden) kann ich berichten, dass sich die Großeltern aus den Niederlanden problemlos mit den Platt sprechenden Großeltern aus dem Münsterland verstehen, obwohl das Platt, das im Münsterland gesprochen wird, auch hier von Stadt zu Stadt und Dorf zu Dorf variiert.

Let me contribute a few additional remarks and personal experiences about Low German (Niederdeutsch, Plattdeutsch, Platt), especially in North Rhine-Westphalia. There is some dispute as to whether Plattdeutsch/Low German is a language in its own right or a dialect. However, Low German is recognized as a regional language in the sense of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages and thus does not count as a dialect of High German. From personal conversations with family I know that also in the Ruhr area/Ruhrgebiet (North Rhine-Westphalia) as an urban agglomeration after the 2nd World War the older generation still spoke Low German, but in the last decades it has completely disappeared there. In the North Rhine-Westphalian Münsterland (a region around the city of Münster, some 50 - 100 km north of Ruhrgebiet), which is still dominated by agriculture, the grandparents' generation still speaks Platt among themselves, the parents' generation can understand it but they hardly speak it, today's children and teenagers still hear it spoken by their grandparents and use it among themselves for cool sayings/phrases that they incorporate into their otherwise spoken High German. In this way, they also signal that they come from this region and perhaps grew up on a farm. From a binational family (mother German, father Dutch from the Netherlands) I can report that the grandparents from the Netherlands can easily get along with the Platt-speaking grandparents from Münsterland although Platt spoken in Münsterland varies once again from town to town and village to village.

Plattdeutsch is a regional dialect from the north. Hochdeutsch is the Standard German such as Queen's English for the English language and not a dialect, as the term is used by most people. From a linguistic point of view the answer would be slightly different. As a technical term, the "high" in High German is a geographical reference to the group of dialects that forms "High German" (i.e. "Highland" German), out of which developed Standard German, Yiddish and Luxembourgish. High German is marked by the High German consonant shift, separating it from Low German (Low Saxon) and Low Franconian (including Dutch) within the continental West Germanic dialect continuum. Most people use Hochdeutsch and Standarddeutsch as synonyms, though strictly speaking this is not correct.

Hochdeutsch and Plattdeutsch are both dialects. Hochdeutsch is rather known as the dialect chosen to be Germany's main language, aka Standard German while Plattdeutsch is a regionally spoken version. No matter what region people in Germany are from, Hochdeutsch is the gateway for both parties to understand each other. So if in doubt, speak or learn Hochdeutsch :)
