Very little, I wouldn't worry about the difference, but here it is anyway. "Go to a movie" refers to a single, non-specific movie which you plan to see in the future. "Go to the movies" refers specifically to the cinema, movie theater, or other place which shows many movies. However, "go to a movie" almost always refers to the same location as "go to the movies". Only rarely are they not the same place.
